Physiological and acoustic study of word initial post-lexical gemination in Moroccan Arabic

چکیده
With the EMA technique we showed that derived word initial [dd] of Moroccan Arabic is produced by our three speakers with a longer acoustic duration and articulatory gesture compared to its initial [d] cognate. The tongue tip gesture during initial [dd] and [d] generally have statistically similar height and amplitude. For two speakers, no significant velocity differences were recorded between [dd] and [d]. Our articulatory observations also show no C-center effect between [d(d)] and [u] in the [d(d)uda] items, which is in accord with the study of Shaw et al. (2009) on word initial [Ci], [CjCi] and [CkCjCi] clusters in MA which they use as an argument against complex onset in this language. Our results seem to show that initial hetero-morphemic geminate [dd] is a cluster of two hetero-syllabic consonants.

Acoustics and Articulation of Medial versus Final Coronal Stop Gemination Contrasts in Moroccan Arabic
This paper presents results of a simultaneous acoustic and articulatory investigation of word-medial and word-final geminate/singleton coronal stop contrasts in Moroccan Arabic (MA). The acoustic analysis revealed that, only for the wordmedial contrast, the two MA speakers adopted comparable strategies in contrasting geminates with singletons, mainly by significantly lengthening closure duratio...
متن کاملNon-linear processing of a linear speech stream: The influence of morphological structure on the recognition of spoken Arabic words
Although the significance of morphological structure is established in visual word processing, its role in auditory processing remains unclear. Using magnetoencephalography we probe the significance of the root morpheme for spoken Arabic words with two experimental manipulations. First we compare a model of auditory processing that calculates probable lexical outcomes based on whole-word compet...
متن کاملGemination at the junction of phonetics and phonology
Tashlhiyt Berber has contrastive singleton and lexical geminate consonants in all positions. In addition, it has two types of phonologically derived geminates: concatenated and assimilated ones. Within CV phonology, geminates, including post-lexical ones, are represented as single melodic units associated to two prosodic positions. This study examines the way these abstract autosegmental repres...
متن کاملThe Initial State and Verbal Stems in Arabic
Semitic verbs exhibit a well-known prohibition against forms with initial gemination, *ssam, or with an initial sequence of two identical consonants, *sasam, alongside an abundance of forms with final gemination or final identity such as samm, samam (Greenberg 1950). This asymmetry has received considerable attention in the phonological literature. Past explanations crucially rely on restrictio...
متن کاملGemination in Tarifit Berber: X-RAY AND ACOUSTIC DATA
This investigation reports on gemination in Tarifit, a variety of Berber language spoken in the North Eastern region of Morocco. It presents results of a simultaneous X-ray and acoustic investigation of singleton and geminate voiced and voiceless stops in three different word positions (initial, intervocalic, and final.) The acoustic parameters examined show that geminates are systematically pr...
